Rainer Rupp "Topas"

Daniel S. writes:
On August 7, 2002 I recorded a  programme of the German TV station
MDR (Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk) titled Krieg der Geheimdienste. Der Mann, der die NATO verriet Topspion Topas. This first episode of a series on spies was about Rainer Rupp, code name Mosel and later Topas, a West German citizen recruited by the HVA (Hauptverwaltung Aufklrung of the GDR) who worked his way to the NATO General Secretary and forwarded a vast amount of military secrets to the East Germans.

The interesting point of this excerpt is, in my opinion, that it confirms once more that the 4-Note numbers station was indeed directed from the GDR to their secret agents in the West and it even suggests that this very station was also used to control Topas.

The TV show transcript follows:

[Announcer, off:] ... they cover the complete planning for the stationing of the missiles. He succeeds not least because he is a high ranking member of the General Secretary; nobody became suspicious.
The documents are highly confidential, only few have access. He photographs the documents in his Brussels office, puts them back, tucks the film rolls in and takes them home.
The HVA in East Berlin informs Rainer Rupp in Brussels, when and where he is to meet the courier.

[4-Note-IS and excerpt of a transmission]
[simultaneously a cue on the screen: Original MfS radio message (!)]
[Excerpt of an interview of a MfS member:] We prepared a telegram, an encoded one, and by radio, by one-way radio, we confirmed the appointment, that is, the day, the location and the time.
[Announcer, off:] Topas has received the notification and deciphers it. He sets off for the nearby Antwerp; there he is to meet the courier, Heinz Schmidt, in a restaurant in the centre.
[Excerpt of an interview with Schmidt] Then he went...

Many thanks to Daniel S. for recording the show and for providing the script and translation.
