On Easter Sunday, 11 APR 04 from a transmitter in Ulbroka, Latvia came a special transmission celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first broadcast of the pirate radio station, Radio Caroline. The frequency used was 9290 kHz.

Of interest to number station fans was an historical look back at another
pirate station, namely European Music Radio which was celebrating its 28th anniversary. They played a selection of old recordings including a clip from 12 DEC 1976. The frequency used was 6250 kHz, which was an unfortunate choice as it turned out, for right on top of the station was one of the infamous Soviet single letter marker Morse beacons (SLHFM).

This was one of the numerous "U" beacons (di di dah) described in the book "Jamming" by Rimantas Pleikys. Below is a description and a frequency list for these beacons and their strange purpose. Listen to the clip by clicking on the EMR logo.
