24 JUL 03   City Centre to Coast-- Off Road  Part 2
As well as the Hull - Hornsea coastal off road route which uses an old railway line, a separate coastal path exists which uses another ex rail line. This path starts in the eastern part of the city and heads off to the coastal resort of Withernsea. However, unlike the excellent Hornsea rail trail, this path starts off as a fully tarmaced wide path, but as soon as the city boundary is reached, the track ends up as a poorly surfaced muddy path- even in the middle of summer. The track ends in Patrington and there is no way to rejoin it without trespassing on private property.

This coastal path starts off in eastern Hull.

Track is accessed from this road in East Hull

All former barriers have been removed, giving a clear run.

Smooth tarmac surface at the eastern Hull border.

At the border with East Yorkshire, the track turns into rough gravel.

Track becomes waterlogged in all but the driest of summers.

Crossing Staithes Lane, Preston

Crossing the main road in Hedon.

Looking back towards Hedon town.

Track improves dramatically into wide cinder track.

Rye Hill railway station.

Dumped cars are not just a city problem. An elephant's graveyard of burned out cars near a quiet lake at Keyingham.

More cars a few metres further on.

Large heap of rotting cucumbers created a stink.

Track has to take a detour as Keyingham station is now private property.

After Keyingham the track becomes increasingly difficult.

Ottringham railway station.

After Ottringham, the track is very difficult indeed. If you're wearing shorts, your legs will get stung and cut.

The only piece of surviving track between Park Farm and Winestead Grange.

Track ends at the station hotel at Patrington, which has no access at all to the old line.

2004 Another year, another bike. 04 and life as a roadie beckons.
